Nathan Riki Thomson โ€“ Resonance (2019)

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฎ Starting a review by a phrase like “And now something unusual” is, apparently, a feature of our channel. This album is no exception.

The brainchild of the Finnish magician Nathan Ricky Thomson is in front of us. The main instrument in Nathan’s hands is the double bass, an instrument of impressive size and no less impressive depth of sound. Usually it does not come to the fore, and if it does, then the bass lines obey conventional logic.

Of course, there is logic on this album, and it refers not to the stage, but rather to the human perception of sound as such. Curiosity drives a person when he finds out how the world sounds around him. And Nathan has been trying to extract this particular approach from the reality.

This music is notable for its nuances, appearing at the points where most musicians would prefer not to stop. Roughness of the strings, sudden knocks, vibrations and melodies that come out of nowhere, breaths and exclamations… all these voices become an integral part of the sound-time continuum.

In addition to the double bass, you will meet a galaxy of various instruments, ancient acoustic and modern electronic, with gadgets and add-ons. But the richest palette returns to its minimal state, folding and unfolding in bizarre cycles, living and developing. This is how a resonance is born, and it’s your turn to catch it.
