3’Ain โ€“ Sea of Stories (2023)

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡พ The Brussels based trio has carved their own route between narrow European lanes and Middle Eastern oases.

On this route, there are blues and tango, free improvisations and observations of musicians set to music.

The album that we will listen to is entitled “The Sea of Stories”. There is a breath of a breeze, a spicy taste of the East and the hardness of coastal stones scattered here and there. The musical wind bends around the strong structures, which sometimes appear through subtle melodies. It merges with them, forming an intuitive basis for the compositions.

The tone is set mostly by the voice of the instrument Yamen Martini, a Syrian trumpeter. The double bass of Otto Kint sounds very soft and silky. Accordionist Pete Maris adds color and freshness, deftly and sensitively following the band’s ideas.

We can find ourselves in the centre of an old European town, afterwards in the Middle East, and then in Argentina. Everywhere the feeling of a passing moment appears and follows us. That’s how the narrative is conceived in this sea of โ€‹โ€‹stories. By the way, there are no drums on the album and it makes the sound especially charming and elegant, with small “field” pauses between themes.
