Math Lessons. E02. Maths for the Beginners

Studying functions and graphs from scratch. Image by lunamontem

After our first episode related to math rock was published, the idea of going deeply into the topic emerged. This compilation is intended to cover rather light fraction of math rock, bordering with power pop, alternative rock, post rock and other areas.

1. Manju – Manju (2023)

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡± We are opening this episode in Chilean mountains. The local indie quintet charges us with light-hearted optimism. Their self-titled album released in Spring 2023 comprises of nice vibes mixed with emotional parties. Besides the guitars, the band uses piano which is not that usual for math rock. It highlights some of the formulas utilized in compositions. However, they are easy to learn and to catch regardless of anyone’s math level. This is cool as wider auditory will love Manju’s music. Our goose is pretty sure about this.

2. Dilettante. – Fields Of (2023)

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ This band’s name corresponds to our episode the best. One has not to be a professor to solve math problems. Hold on, there is no problem at all with this release. Hailing from Wausau, Wisconsin, the guys share bright and not too complicated tunes enriched with proper maths. This EP is homemade but appears to be high-quality indeed. Let’s walk along these fields full of brilliant moments. The sunshine is everywhere in this music. Perky bass lines and mild drumming cannot spoil it but only increase the joy.

3. Guiding Lights – Pohuk Sessions (2021)

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡± Now, we find ourselves in Warsaw. We are invited to a short but energetic live session that drastically boosts the math skills. It even may have a therapeutic effect on some of you. It adjusts the organism for better communication with the world. The strings resonate with the blood vessels and the beats influence the breath. Interacting with Guiding Lights improves your sight as wellю All positive reactions and no contraindications to any components. Polish your gut feelings and enjoy the music with this awesome trio!

4. Fayzz – Connection (2021)

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ Our next location is Chinese Chengdu. The local band CONNECTION has been juggling the genres. They are enriching guitar-driven rock with elements of jazz, hip-hop and post-rock. And all this is done with mathematical precision and conciseness. We are going to go through experiments and shifts from the main line of the album and back. Though, each time we will return to the realm of diverse, free and inspiring music. Vivacity when listening is guaranteed! And you don’t need any glasses or something to get proper perception.

5. Cake Function – Form Over (2023)

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ The duo introduces themselves in the easiest way: “Andrew plays guitar, Evan plays drums”. The guys make the dough and bake tasty musical cakes. Every once and then, they put some topping while the rest of the time the music stays plain and straightforward. When they decide to go deeper, it becomes quirky and a little bit tangled again. With this record, Cake Function presents the best cooking recipes they have ever created for three years or so since their debut release. We should admit that the second one is much matured.

6. Llana – Traverse (2023)

πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ At this point, the vocals appear in our episode. Berlin based young band Llana adds sincere emotions and vital energy. We’ll meet the strangest of the birds along our way through the cities. Some of them are busy ones while the rest seem abandoned. So many encounters and forgotten moments. Llana will help us not to get lost in the memories. Surfing through details which we have been captured, we arrive at the same state. Is anything changing? At least, our trip continues and lets us new experience and new feelings.

7. Butohes – To Breathe (2023)

πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ In the middle of the route, our goose meets young Japanese composer Michiro Inatsug. This time, he decided to use just his instruments without applying synths and going deeply into audio processing. This is why the sound occurs to be natural and resonating. It’s like it is delivered exactly into the neurons. There, thousands of oscillations are triggered. The are emerging and growing with the guitar made repetitive structures and tender beats. Occasionally, mathematics disappear from time to time, and the vocals together with the electronics are reigning for a while.

8. Codices – Vivid (2021)

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ The next participant coming from London blends math rock with experiments. Powerful riffs on the verge of rock and metal, some alternative stuff, tremolos and transitions in post rock style, and eventually the British temper. All these components are playing their roles and follow the inner rules. Through the listening, a couple of compositions offer more technical approach while others are keeping romance and dreaminess. That’s how the codices work, nothing to violate. Follow the guidelines and live your best live!

9. Destructor de Formas – Animales Mutantes (2023)

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡· And now we are heading to Buenos Aires to spot the Mutant Animals. Our goose was slightly frightened because he was clueless about whom these creatures can be. However, not that scary. Argentinian trio plays catchy alternative with stirrings from progressive, garage, psychedelic rock and even from old-school rock ‘n’ roll. Keeping true to mathematics, they are deconstructing conventional forms and constructing something new, eclectic and interesting, instead. The guys strongly recommend to put up volume, by the way.

10. As Silent As The Forest – Tranquility EP (2023)

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ The last opus for today’s episode comes from Manila, Philippines. The trio made by the brothers Garcia and Girl Estanislao on vocals and bass has been around since the year 2015. Their EP is not really calm as the title may declare. For sure, there are peaceful moments as well as dark days, but the main themes are progressive and mighty enough to set the appropriate mood. Here, the mathematic constructs are rather compact and discreet, exactly like we expected when starting to collect gems for this episode. Thank you As Silent As The Forest and all other tutors as well!
