Østerlide – Kilden (2023)

🇳🇴 Once you start listening to this album, you will instantly be transported to the ends of the earth. There you’ll spend time alone with the nature.

Norwegian trio Østerlide (“East Side”) released their second album this year. And it is truly boundless in its minimalism and amazing sensuality. Find yourselves in the place with endless forests, rocks and glaciers descending like tongues. There is a moment that lasts forever and the collective shares it with us.

The Østerlide’s choice of artistic tools is interesting. Instead of traditional Scandinavian instruments, they preferred the guitar and, unexpectedly, the oriental rubab. Thanks to it, from time to time you can imagine the voices of bagpipes, a hurdy-gurdy or even a violin. But none of these tools are used! The percussion plays its role superbly, only coming in when it’s needed. It is like the minimum of accompaniment is used. You’ll hear more silence than parties.

For sure, the vocals by Liv Ulvik are incomparable. The voice is flying from the ground into the clouds. The lyrics on this album seem coming from the frozen time. I wouldn’t be surprised if the words of these songs were found in a bottle washed up on the fjord shore. This music can be observed from within while it is playing. “Do you see how the clear stream flows slowly forward?”
