Out of the Post-metal. E03. Ice-Cold Waves Everywhere

Dive into freezing waters. Image by artgiagzhel

Post-metal is rather an intergalactic black hole than a genre. It melts the matter of a wide variety and comes in different forms. Let’s taste the cold one.

1. Dimwind – The Futility Of Breathing (2023)

🇸🇪 Our first dive starts with a preparatory swim in the beginning of this album. The Swedish band has chosen a calm beginning for their monumental act, followed a progressive continuation and a tense culmination. Here the sound from time to time returns to the traditional metal element, taking on a classic riff format and a harmonious rhythm. It is worth waiting a bit, and right in the middle of the melting compositions, the features of a lengthy post-rock appear, with a slight touch of black and other heavy trends.

2. Ypres – Solypso (2023)

🇷🇺 The recent work by this St. Petersburg based quartet follows the line from the Big Bang to the birth of supernovae. Immersing the listener into itself, this music unfolds fractal after fractal. Moreover, a surprise has been prepared for you. I suggest you find on your own a track with female vocals on this record. By the way, the most impressive and goosebumpish composition for me was the one entitled “Threads”. It’s truly a jump into the abyss, completely unknown and infinite.

3. Saar – Gods (2021)

🇫🇷 Right in the middle of Paris lays a secret portal to another world. Feel free to look for it. Immediately you’ll find yourself on the other side, watching something unusual that is happening here. The density and straightforwardness of hardcore meets the immensity of post-metal. Apparently, you will not notice any joints or the flaws. There are none of them. These two components are combined so masterfully that they are flowing into each other back and forth. Overall, it sounds natural and nickel.

4. Divided – Riser (2022)

🇧🇪 This short EP caming to us from Kortrijk is the next in line. Hey, let’s leave the obvious question aside, forgetting for a moment about heroes and titans. Just listen to these fellows, and surely there is something here. The first track will pour out an unstoppable energy on you. It will jump out of your right ear into the left one. Possibly in the reverso order though. Afterwards, meet hardcore and something punkish splashed into post-metal. They also mention sludge and stoner, at least some kind of those.

5. Jeffk – Tar (2023)

🇩🇪 Now let’s move on to Leipzig. The local trio is already waiting for our attention. This is only the third release from the band in more than a decade of creative work. It is an accurate illustration of the “rarely but neatly” principle. The guys paved the route on the verge of post-rock and post-metal, with a noticeable share of melancholy, technicality, thoughtfulness and aggression. Yeah, this record is subjected to a variety of forces. Sometimes they accelerate the pace, then slowing it down in order to catch the right moment and turn the spiral in the other direction.

6. Codespeaker – Codespeaker (2022)

🇬🇧 Here is another cover in black and white. The music really matches it, being viscous, meditative, just coming down from the icy mountains. The material prepared by the Scots turned out to be more than worthy of receiving the title of the same name as the band. Well, here the sound is multi-layered. Each time it is literally crushing you. Soft instrumental transitions are like the glaciers between the peaks. They are only harbingers of upcoming avalanches, which are passing one by one.
