Four Picks: 4 Sonic Mirages

This time, our four findings all have something illusive inside. Possibly you’ll meet nostalgic feelings. Perhaps it will be strange illusions. Everything is possible.

1. Mohs. โ€“ Mirage (2023)

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ Since we are dealing with the mirages, why not start with an album that is called exactly that way? The Swiss quartet skillfully juggles jazz melodies, soft arrangements, and electronic tricks. You’ll mention echoes of pop, alternative, hip-hop and something more serious, even hinting at the academic music. This ambiguous image appears somewhere on the horizon, only to melt away like a castle in the sky after a short while.

2. Paul van Kemenade & Budha Building โ€“ Particles (2023)

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ The show by the Dutch duo continues our gallery of sonic illusions. The third opus by this creative union is called “Particles”. The velvet alto saxophone’s timbre frames the fabulous ambient, not subjected to gravity and disintegration. Myriads of sound particles make their spontaneous round dance, carrying you away. It’s simply impossible to resist.

3. Charity Empressa โ€“ A Riot Of Snowflakes (2023)

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ We are moving further into abstract and voluminous music. Another duet, this time from sunny California, offers a journey into the world of twisted images born in a brief sparkle of improvisation. The overpowering drone in bringing to the surface acoustic and electronic parties. Guitars, banjos, keyboards, brass, as well as dialogues and monologues, everything plunges into a boundless experiment and emerges from it in a new light.

4. Divided by Design โ€“ The Fear of Being Forgotten (2023)

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง The last mirage for today emerges from the British Isles. Here comes bewitching prog, sometimes nostalgic, stubbornly looking into the future from time to time. Timeless guitar solos are lost in the labyrinths of their own ideas, giving way to the keys that continue the journey into the unknown.
