Our musical goose brought another unique find from his travels. It’s a recording of an international quartet happened as a part of the “Andrés Coll Odyssey” project.
We’ve already met wonderful Majid Bekkas one day before. In addition to composing and performing compositions in the Moroccan gnawa tradition, his focus is on the broadest experiments at the intersection of cultures and interpretations. As always, he plays the guembri and the marimba. You will hear his voice as well.
The next member of the quartet is Andrés Coll from Spain. His instruments are electric marimba and castanets. His compatriot Ramon Lopez is behind the drums and plays tabla in some compositions. Finally, the unrivaled musical set is completed by the Polish violinist Mateusz Smoczyński.
This is certainly an unobvious lineup of top-notch musicians. They turn a round-the-world trip into a cozy adventure in their outstanding collaboration. The ensemble effortlessly abolish the ephemeral boundaries between jazz, folk music and avant-garde, allowing listeners to experience everything at once.
The album was recorded live at one of the European world music festivals in 2023 and was released next spring.
