Deerlady, Mali Obomsawin, Magdalena Abrego – Greatest Hits (2024)

🇺🇸 Here is an album which gives the impression that it is about everything at once. It is something light-weighted, close to folk but not quite folk. A guitar with a rhythm section play the central role, sometimes in the rock style, sometimes revealing some kind of experimentation.

Delving deeper, we learn that this is a collection of songs written and performed by Mali Obomsawin, a representative of the Abenaki tribes. In her art she explores both the music of the indigenous peoples inhabiting the United States and Canada and various directions of rock, jazz and pop music. Therefore, it is not difficult to spot traces of all these trends in her eclectic writings.

By collaborating with Mali, Magdalena Abrego makes up the Deerlady group. This lady is the daughter of immigrants from Mexico and Puerto Rico. She brings no less rich sound palette. Besides the ladies, several musicians took part in the recording. They manage a synthesizer and a drum kit, possibly several since three drummers are stated in the release description.

You can turn this album on and halt yourself. The music itself will make a circle, from simple state to complicated one, and back and forth.
