Anamaria Oramas – Ramas Lejanas (2023)

🇨🇴 Ethnojazz is not always about Africa or the Mediterranean region. South America is another place from which this “symbiotic” art grows vigorously.

Today we are listening to Colombian diva Anamaria Oramaza and her colorful ensemble. The composer herself plays the winds, namely Colombian flutes and gaita, a Galician bagpipe.

The band mainly consists of guitarist Santiago Sandoval, David Cuervo on double bass and Kike Narváez on drums. More than a dozen musicians took part in the creation of this album, expressing their voices to fill the free flow of feelings.

The album was released in autumn 2023 on the In-Correcto label, based in bustling Bogota. It deals with popular dance and entertainment music, local folk, and sometimes something more sophisticated. Anamaria manages to be in all these categories at the same time while not belonging to any of them.

Listening to the album, you get into the idea of its title (something like “distant branches”). We either end up in an impenetrable jungle or find ourselves in a noisy crowd. We wander along the coast, and then towards rocky mountains. The landscapes unfold by themselves and nothing interferes as each musician does his own thing and barely flickers among the vines.
