Bokanté – History (2023)

🇺🇸 🇬🇵 🇬🇭 🇯🇵 🇸🇪 The Bokanté supergroup found itself in our cozy community for the first time, although our goose had already met its founder Michael League on his way.

The composition of the team is truly international. Just take a look at our traditional flag plate. Here in one ensemble you will hear voices from Guadeloupe, Ghana, the USA, Japan and Sweden. Indeed, these voices sound so organically together that the boundaries dissolve by themselves.

The very first track from this album reminded me of several things at once and none of them at the same time. It just burst in with a fresh wind. How can this be? Is it an imaginary déjà vu? Is it the universal language of music? When it comes to the languages, as the vocalist Malika Tirolien is originally from Guadeloupe, so along with the metropolitan languages, English and French, you will hear songs in Creole. And musically, the project’s creativity is so diverse that correlating it with one or more phenomena seems pointless.

Bokanté’s compositions are especially great at revealing themes when the main rhythmic pattern is transformed into a new outline, and the artist-storytellers change places, as if in a boat, from the oars to the bow and back. And every time they pull out a new tool and a new story from the bottom of this boat.
