Four Picks. 4 Post-progressive Acts

Today’s picks are somewhat aside from our series dedicated to post-rock. Here are four albums with progressive guitar rock meeting experimentation and invention.

1. ·Mar – Mar I (2022)

🇦🇷 Let’s start with the self-titled album by the Argentine trio. It was released a couple of years ago, namely in October 2022. By the way, just recently they delighted fans with a handful of covers of famous compositions. Still, we will listen to a debut work which has a deep and varied sound. There is something for any connoisseur of progressive instrumental stuff. At some moments, intelligent djent begins and just after that you’ll have a drum roll almost from black metal. But the guys seem to be just looking into these abysses but not falling deep. Apparently, they prefer to remain on the crest of the wave.

2. Lahmana – On Embracing a Blank Space (2024)

🇦🇹 Here is another debut album. It is coming from a trio as well, this time from the Austrian one. The cover evokes feelings of desolation and lostness and hints at the majestic, breathtaking music underneath. And so it turns out, the harder progressive sound changes to soft space rock with psychedelia with infinity hiding behind.

3. A Blur Within – Distance From Self (2024)

🇨🇦 We are now heading to Quebec to get away from our selves, in some sense. At least, Loïc, the local musician and this project’s author, chose such a title for his beautiful work. In addition to all the parts that he performed himself, he also added a little mathematics and atmospheric ambient on the periphery of the compositions.

4. Sleepmakeswaves – It’s Here, But I Have No Names For It (2024)

🇦🇺 The trio parade of this episode is completed by a album by Sydney based collective. The style of sound underwent back-and-forth movements, becoming saturated with electronics and temporarily freeing itself from it. Nevertheless, the intelligent post-rock with a noticeable dose of progressive stuff has always remained at the core. The latest band’s album with a weird title definitely did not disappoint.
