We continue to explore the universe of post-rock. Our third episode is dealing with a sonorous faction, which can be distinguished by its bright sound. This effect can be achieved using different techniques. For instance, there may be abundant tremolos here and there. On the other hand, it’s often the case that arrangements with explosive goosebumps come at the climax of the compositions. Let’s discover it right away.

1. The Ills – T.W.I.T (2021)

🇸🇰 Let’s start our episode with the album by this Slovak quartet. It is the latest one so far and we hope that there will be more brilliants from the guys in the closest future. By the time “T.W.I.T” was released in 2021, the group had clearly achieved appropriate level of mastery to determine their own style. Here we get nine melodic compositions in which notes of melancholy play in tandem with optimistic sparks. Guess which component prevails and check if your answer is right.

2. JuffBass – Emptiness Reigns (2023)

🇭🇺 The second pick comes from the south of Europe. We are going to listen to a solo work by Zoltan, the musician from Hungary. His compositions are distinguished by the emphasis on guitar parts which soar above the rhythm. Among екру surprises prepared by the author you’ll hear kanun and duduk, which are not so characteristic of post-rock. They are used along with synthesizers, thanks to which the sound evokes thoughtfulness and instills positive emotions.

3. Clouds Indoor – A Journey (2023)

🇧🇪 Don’t be surprised if the beginning of this album reminds you of several “canonical” acts at once. The Belgian band goes through the time and their vessel is agile. What follows is more interesting as the group discovers something of its own along the winding path of eclecticism. You are invited on the journey that never stops. Notice how the track titles act as the trail markers. They align into an intriguing story that we are about to live through, track by track. Make the first step and the footpath will do the rest.

4. —Seru – Sulung (2023)

🇲🇾 The next release comes from the country of Malaysia. A local quintet offers us to “mendapat inspirasi” which means to get inspired. According to the brief annotation from the group, the source of this mesmerizing inspiration is classical Malay music. It sounds exciting and unexpected from post rock! However, the band’s experimental approach unites echoes of the folk music, traditions and some rock stuff within something emerging and seaming vague. Through the album, it is gradually acquiring mature features. Thus it becomes to inspire, and that’s the clue.

5. Sigma Ori – Beyond the Dome (2021)

🇪🇸 This episode is completed by a record from Spain. It seems that the four Catalan experimenters put into this work the full force that they had accumulated over several years of creativity. The music turned out to be airy and rich, and especially sonorous. Glide through the vibrations and they will deliver you to the open sea where the waves rise and fall. Some of them will come directly to you and elevate you to a state with a rays of goosebumps. That’s the true advantage of post-rock, isn’t it?
